Cyanotypes on glass, custom-made light boxes wired together
Fragile, dissolving childhood memories and the places in which they were formed.
Jamais Vu (Never Seen) consists of 18 cyanotype images printed on glass sheets and faceted into custom-made light boxes. Snapshots of childhood life connect with artistic photographs of domestic spaces via two branching circuits. The work grasps at grief, the loss of familiarity, the loss of home, and the loss of innocence. Glass as a material exhibits the fragility and delicacy of these issues while the cyanotype hue operates to create a space detached from time and reality. The cyanotype process itself reflects an attempt to preserve moments; moments that already seem lost and unfamiliar.
"Jamais Vu" is a psychological phenomenon often deemed the opposite of Déjà Vu. Translating to "never seen", the term describes a false sense of unfamiliarity -- an unsettling feeling of being a stranger to what was once entirely familiar.
